Naked at the Gay Sauna

I go to the gay gym/sauna quite often, usually twice a week. One of the things I find strange is the minuscule number of naked gay men there. Inevitably, I am nude, and am generally the only one fully nude. Others wear workout clothes, tuck their towels around their waists like a skirt, or strategically place it over their cocks to hide their manhoods.

I am reminded of a recent piece by a nudist here on Medium who talked about the French attitude towards nudity — that it was easy going and not necessarily sexual. I like looking at naked bodies, both male and female ones. Sometimes my gaze is sexual, sometimes it’s just curious.

Now let’s be clear: I’m going to the gay sauna in part because I want sexual attention from men. Others, presumably, are here for the same reason.

So I’m really puzzled about all the towels and gym shorts. Aren’t people here to get naked? And isn’t being naked just a prelude to public sex? I understand that some people are prudes, but why be prude in a gay sauna?

While I like the French attitude towards nudity — no big deal — I find the rigid distinctions drawn by most nudists between sexual and non sexual nude behaviour quite strange. To ask a stupid question/make a bad joke: What do nudists wear to have sex? A towel.
